I have a 1998 9000CSE, with 5-speed transmission. This problem is bedeviling my mechanic (after three visits) and me.
When the ambient temperature is above 20 degrees F, my windshield washer squirts fluid out of the nozzles on the hood and the headlamps, just as designed. However, when the ambient temperature is below 20 degrees F, my windshield washer will not squirt fluid out of the windshield nozzles on the hood, and indeed, not even out of the hose that leads from the top of the engine compartment to the underside of the hood when I disconnect that hose - but it does continue to squirt fluid from the headlight nozzles at all temperatures. Fluid consumption seems to be high, but presently there is no leak of washer fluid when the car is parked. Also, I understand that a single motor pumps fluid to both the windshield and the headlamp nozzles. The gallons of washer fluid I've run through it is not freezing everywhere I have access to it (at the reservoir, motor and at the hood and headlamps).
What’s been done so far by my mechanic and by me, in order:
- Due to initial leak from valve near the pump motor, swapped valves between the one near the motor, and the left windshield nozzle. Fluid ran out through headlamp nozzle by gravity, so let mechanic finish job at routine maintenance.
- New valve at left windshield nozzle.
- New valve near motor.
- New short hose from motor to valve near motor.
- Removed the two windshield nozzles on the hood and replaced with simple T-junctions
The symptoms remain. By the way, the rear window washer has worked without a problem.
Help. If anyone has a diagram they can post or email of the routing of the washer fluid lines, connectors and valves, especially if it reveals hidden valves or connectors, please share it.
Thanks.
Fred
