But due to some car's having some resistance in a connector or two getting to the ECU from the battery/alternator there will sometimes be a little less shown on the display. As for voltage the main thing is note the starting voltage displayed (considerably lower than the running voltage and after rolling 50 feet or cycling the INFO button it will reset to the system running voltage). If it drops 2-3 volts below it's normal starting level a battery problem is starting to show. If the running voltage is jumping wildly or showing a steady decline there is a problem with the charging system.
When the display jumps to the temp display it is showing you that you are experiencing freezing temperatures (-1 to 1 °C or 30-33°F)and it is just a warning that there could be ice forming on the roadway.
This used to be covered in the owner's manual but maybe GM cut that part out as a ink cost savings move in the later 9K's.
