The ones that keep the kind of lid seal in place and are covered by a trim "list" for the whole length of the door?

They are actually some special (nylon?) pop rivets. You can press the retaining bit (the hole in mid of the rivet) by gently tapping it in. After that the rivet comes out. Sometimes you can be even lucky and get the rivet out with the retaining bit.

In re-attachment I used small general purpose (wood) screws and small piece of plastic tube (actually a sheath of wire) to re-attach them. Problem in my solution is that the trim list on top of the rivets with screw heads a bit out don't really seat well.

BUT I'd say that the major thing is the rust... I'd say that you have lost the battle and you can expect the rust to become very visible within 2 years.

Main problem place is the lower and lower part of side edges of the door i.e. where the outer shield piece is bent over the door frame piece. The welding is done by spot welding and between the metal sheets there are obvious gaps. Water and especially salt (if you live on such area where salt is used) gets into and corrodes the sheets from inside... result is the rusted edge.

Other place are the surrondings of the rivets,,, Atleast some of them will be crispy as a potato chip...

Of course you can try,,, Use good paints and antirust stuff to completely seal the gaps etc. Also remember that the inside of the door gets water in from the window seals. Check and clean the drainage holes in the bottom of the door.

BTW,,, from year 92 or 93 onwards the doors are made of zinc covered sheets i.e. rust should not be such big issue as in earlier models.
