It is hard for me to explain, but there are a series of contacts that show the fuel level for the sender. Kind of like 1/2 f stops on a camera, it is not a continuous measurement, it is a series of steps. Don't think I would notice a 10 or 20 mile change when there is 200 miles to go, but when there is only 10 or 20 to go, you are suddenly at zero. So I guess that was my educated guess for the sudden change. Also if one of those contacts near the end of the line of contacts is corroded, you won't get a good reading.
I've also heard that it is unwise to let the tank go below 1/8 for another reason. The gas keeps the pump motor cool preventing damage or excess wear from overheating. I'm trying to keep my tank over 1/4, but with the price fluctuating $.30/gal or more, I try to catch the down cycle.
