This is a two part post.
Part I
Are there any techinical high schools or vocational schools that need a '97 Saab 9000CS to learn on? The clutch, I'm told, snapped and shot a piece of metal through the transmission. Both need to be replaced and, given the cost, it's probably not going to happen. I love my Saab and dread driving something else.
Part II
The lead up to the clutch snapping is odd and I'm wondering if anyone has any input.
Before the clutch snapped, the serpentine belt went out. I took it to the dealership to get replaced. They suggested that they do a full walkaround/diagnostic. As a result, they found a bunch of other things wrong with it. We got the most critical things repaired.
I went to pick up the car, which they left idling out front. I got in, put the car in gear and THWWWUMP. That's apparently when the clutch snapped and drove the metal through the transmission.
The dealership said the whole thing was a bad co-incidence, and I can somewhat understand that. The questions that I have are -
1) I realize that you can't do an easy visual inspection of the clutch, but one of the things they said was that it was on its way out. If the clutch was that badly off, wouldn't a mechanic notice this when driving it to and from the bay? It was not listed on the inspection report. Should it have been?
2) They said that one of the reasons that the metal pierced the transmission was that something had leaked onto it and weakened the metal. Again, this was not listed on the inspection report. Should it have been?
I'm not a car person, so I really can't make a judgement. I'd like to believe them but spending $800 and getting back a dead car makes it hard.
Thanks for any help!
