Can't say if anything is wrong or not but I can clarify a misconception in earlier postings.
Your 96 9000 uses a newer ABS system than what most posters has been suggesting with trouble shooting.
The change between ABS system MkII and MkIV happened around 1993.
The MkII system uses an accumulator to keep pressure stored, and on that system you can get the lights to come on after pumping the pedal hard for about 3-14 times.
With the MkIV system they went back to vacuum controlled brake booster and the need for an accumulator disappeared.
As I said earlier, I don't know if anything is wrong but if the ABS pump is really noisy it might be on its way out. The price tag on the hydraulic unit is a little bit steep though, $1700.00 + labor to replace, so it's nothing to just try on a whim.
Have you tried having the brake system flushed?
Is there any fault codes logged in the ECU?
