Because some of the auto-boxes seem to have been made on a "good" day at the factory, and some on a "bad" day. Seriously, though, many people have had their autos last well into the 200K mile range, even with hard driving, with zero problems, while others die before 100K with pretty good maintenance. Pretty much the rule is if the tranny has been well taken care of and meticulously maintained, it will last a long time. But, they are fragile, and need fluid changed regularly. Mine right now has 125K miles on it, and is still going strong.
