1997 Aero - missing under high boost - FIXED!!!

My 1997 Aero started missing badly under redzone boost about a month ago (Maptun Stage 3). I first attributed it to a bad tank of gas - fillup from a small country station (90 was their highest octane), but after 5 fresh tanks of 93 and 94 octane it was still missing/hesitating.
I started examining vacuum lines and found a broken one at the fuel pressure regulator - aha! I thought. Fixed that but no improvement in performance. My mechanic recommended fresh plugs, even though my current NGK's only have 12K miles of mostly highway driving.
So tonight I put in new plugs and presto - no more misses! The old plugs have really bad carbon deposits and black residue.
Question - could the condition of the plugs be caused by the fpr vacuum line being broke - I would think under heavy boost that might cause the fuel/air mix to run lean, but the deposits seem to indicate a rich mixture?? Or was it bad gas? Or none of the above? Doesn't really matter - I'm just happy to be redzone boosting again!
