Steering knocks - possible solution

Three weeks ago we became aware of a slight knocking almost popping sound on the steering of our 98 model CSE. It was occasional at first but became more persistent even on slight turns (but only one knock per turn!). It could be replicated by jiggling the steering wheel just a little when the car was still as well. I thought I'd get the local SAAB dealer to give a quick check, since I didn't want to take any chances with steering.
After about a 20-30 minute look they diagnosed it as the knuckle joint being worn at the bottom end of the steering shaft (inside the car) - cost £390 parts and labourto fix. However, they said that this was unusual for a car of only 63000 miles.
Seemed a lot of money to me and since they said they would need to order the part from Sweden I decided to look myself the next morning.
It took me only 5 minutes to pull up a rubber boot in the footwell and find the joint at the bottom of the steering shaft. Well, they were right that the noise was coming from this bottom joint but the cure was much simpler than they suggested and no cost! There is a pinch bolt on the bottom of this joint, so I thought it was worth giving it a little tighten with a socket. I tried a one quarter turn and it was cured. Three weeks and 1000 miles on the steering now seems fine.
Yes, I did write to the SAAB garage and they did feel that in hindsight their mechanic could have perhaps checked the pinch bolt. They assured me that if they had ordered a new part and on fitting it found that it was only the pinch bolt they would of course not of fitted it!!
