To be honest I think it's safe to say that many here have been in very similar situations either with their own saab or with some other brand. For me though, I think it's always fair to stand on the side of "what will I use this car for" attitude before I buy it. If you know you need to drive 100+ miles per day and the car you're buying is 10+ yrs old, then perhaps that's not the right automobile for the task, and if you decide that it will or must be, you've also decided at that time that you're gonna have to spend money to keep it running in the manner you wanna use it in. On the other hand, if you are like me and you just want an old saab to have some fun with (project car) then perhaps you'll never be let down or left stranded because well, it's a project car in the first place. There are complete used engine on line at places like e-bay for example from time to time to be had for less than a few hunbdred bucks. If it were me I'd keep the saab (considering how far you've already come with it expense wise) and continue to build upon it, but again only in the manner of having a project car that perhaps from time to time I'd take more than 100 miles from home. You can most likely rebuild it yourself it it needs such work and at minimal expense I'm sure (less than $1000). I would however get something else to drive back and forth to work that was more reliable (newer).
If you don't want to do the above, consider parting it out to get back most if not more than you have in it. In it's current condition, trading or selling it would'nt be worth while, so that means giving it away would I suppose be the next best thing to rebuilding it. Your call....
See Ya,
