Looking for advice - My wife's CD was side swiped several months ago(Nobody hurt - One of the reasons a lot of us drive Saabs), anyways, we have since bought a 9-5 GF Wagon which is pretty bad in the snow with summer tires. So I decided to fix up the collision damage so it looks respectable and use the CD throught out the winter months instead of the 9-5. Besides, when it got hit the car had 189K miles and I would have liked to reach the 200K mile milestone. So now it has 193k miles and unfourtanetly the alternator stopped working, I took it out and find that the commutator was severely worn. It will cost $150 for a rebuilt or about $30 for a used one, if I remove it from a car in a junkyard. Since I will be donating the car in a few months I would rather not put in a $150 part. Also, removing the Alternator at the junk yard on a 9000 is a pain. Does anyone know if one of these electrical places can replace the commutator alone? What could that cost? The other choice might be removing the 80A alternator(looks a lot easier than on the 9000) from a 900 and use that for the remaining life of the CD (The CD had a 115A)
Should I just bag it and move on? If the car was not in the accident I would have just put in a rebuilt unit and would have easily kept the car for at least another 50K miles.
I suppose another posibility is to get the rebuilt put in and then remove it when I get rid of the CD, and put in in my '94 Aero when that one gives out(Has 157K mile)
TIA for any words of wisdom.
