The easiest on those cars is to remove the axle from car and mount it in a big vise.
You can cut the metal ring on the inner boot and pull the axle out of the driver with just the tri pod bearing and boot still on the shaft.
In 1991 when the 2.3l engine arrived they tighten up the specs on the splines on C/V joint and shaft (and maybe even used loctite).
Before that is was enough to open the lock ring and tap on the C/V joint for it to come apart. Many times it was enough to just open the lock ring and pull the C/V joint of with your hand.
With the tighter specs, you have to give the C/V joint a couple of REALLY good blows with a lead or brass sledge hammer while holding the circlip open with a plier.
The key is to get the joint to move enough so that the lock ring gets out of its groove (1/16) and doesn't need be held open with the plier. After that you can grab the outer part of C/V joint with your hand (for support) and pound away with the lead hammer on the back of joint.
