It sounds like your tranny may be starting in 2nd gear instead of 1st. That would explain the lack of power, because the engine is running at lower RPM, where it has less power.
This isn't bad for the transmission. Starting in a higher gear means less torque multiplication, so there is less stress in the tranny. There might be a little extra slippage in the torque converter during startup, but that shouldn't really be a problem. Many trannies are designed to start up in 2nd as an economy mode.
About the only issues I would have are (1) lack of low end acceleration, and (2) potential to be running the engine at verly low RPM. Lack of low end acceleration is fine if you're not in a hurry and want to save gas. However, if you REALLY need to get out of the way (that truck is not going to stop in time!), then it's nice to have that drop-into-first-and-go. The second issue is 'lugging' the engine. Running the engine at very low RPM isn't very good for it in the long haul. It can contribute to carbon buildup and worse gas milage. This would only really be an issue if you get stuck in stop-and-go driving a lot, and spend a lot of time driving very slowly in 2nd gear, when 1st would be more appropriate.
So - do you need to fix it right away? Probably not. Should you plan on getting it fixed? You bet.
