My old 89 thermostat had issues so I decided to order one from the Indy locally. This was a good time to throw in the 82 thermo to evaluate the coolant temperature differences between running both. Here goes:
1988 9000T
Temp gauge tapped into bypass coolant hose from back of cylinder head, Autometer cobalt electric temp gauge...in F. 89/92C fan switch. New radiator, water pump, hoses etc...Whistle clean
On very similar days (ambient temperature about 9C) I got....
82C thermo:
Average of 120F-130F cruising on highway, sometimes even off the gauge i.e. BELOW 120F. Yes, you heard right. 140F in traffic, slow driving...rough average.
89 thermo: 155-160F cruising on the highway, 160-170F in traffic, slow driving. At times 150F down a few hills on the highway under little load in 5th. NOt hot enough to kick in the fan in traffic. that will have to be left to summer days here;-)
For the climate I'm in-- the 89thermo is the best choice. 120F or below is some fairly cool coolant if you as me, even though it is the bypass pipe, but a good indication nonetheless!
One observation...when warmed up the car idles far smoother with the hotter thermo, for obvious reasons.
Interesting eh?
