If the air filter is dirty, it should be serviced...

The K&N filtering system is designed to capture dust, dirt, etc. while still allowing more air flow through than a conventional air filter. Actually, the filtering process works better the dirtier it gets. However, this junk builds-up over time and will restrict the air flow, thus the need to clean it.

K&N recommends that its filter products be serviced/cleaned every 50,000 miles. To do this, you spray the dirt out of the filter with a garden hose, ensuring the dirt is pushed out the same way it came in (meaning, you don't want to further imbed the stuff). Then you let the filter air dry completely. After, you spray a light oil all over the element, and then re-install into your airbox. You can buy a kit that contains this oil (and stickers) from any supplier.

Since you have a modified airbox, more than likely, junk is being allowed to enter the filter than if you were using a stock box. This probably means you need to service your filter sooner than 50K miles.

The fact that you use 87 octane fuel will give you better mpg than higher octane, but it will give you less performance from the turbo. Can't have everything!!!!

One other note: be sure to use NGK plugs, and to change them every 12K miles with a gap-size check interval around 6K. The fact that your plugs are black and not brown could be due to many other things than just your water temp.
