As nonsensical as this may seem, I am positive that something I did today while working on the valve cover lead to loosing my clutch a couple minutes after I started to test-drive it.
This is a '93 CSE-t. I had an oil leak from the lower driver's side of the valve cover and the distributor plug seal. I sprayed a can of degreaser on the burned on oil at the block and manifold, washed it off with a hose (taking care not to soak any electrical components), then pulled the valve cover and re-did the seals.
I've also recently been having temperature spikes - stop at a light after city driving and I watch the temp needle nose up towards the red; a rev of the engine or starting to drive drops it back to 1/2 way. Today, I watched it climb almost into the red before dropping down, shortly before the clutch went out.
The first sign was the pedal dropping, over about 5 minutes it went from 1/2 its normal travel to completely on the floor, no effect. Managed to get the car home into my driveway before it failed completely, quite fortunately.
Does anyone have any theories as to what might be going on? I know of course that replacing the valve cover would have nothing to do with this, but could the degreasing/washing in the area above the tranny have somehow killed the slave cyl or line? And where could the temperature issues fit in, including the fact that it got higher than I've ever had before (just below red) a couple of minutes before the clutch went out?
Fortunately my project 900cvt is almost complete, so I can afford to wait and work on the 9000. Any clues that you could provide would be most appreciated.
