include check all the vacuum hoses, large and small: check the PCV valve is still a one-way street: check the operation of the BPC valve (some people manage to clean these successfully): ditto hooter valve, tho' no cleaning option here: make sure you are using decent fuel (try changing your regular supplier, maybe): check plug condition – the NGK web site is very helpful if you're not clear on what to look for. And, of course, make sure your new plugs are the right resistor NGKs! You know all this already, so sorry if it sounds basic, but you did ask.

I'm not sure if you think the engine is running hot, or just that it works best when it isn't. All turbos prefer cold conditions to hot ones but it's winter so it can't be THAT hot outside. If the plugs tell you your mixture is weak, that would cause hot running, and maybe the temperature sensor in the inlet tract needs replacing (cleaning can work on that, too, if it looks oily).

Sure there are other things to check too! If I had to bet I'd pick the BPC valve but that's just Murphy's Law, because it's the most expensive item on the list.

It seems that the boost gauge needle on a typical auto will get to the beginning of the stripy yellow section and hold there - it would not normally get to the red, though of course cars (and gauges) vary. But wouldn't expect it to taper, either.

Finally, you might like to depress yourelf by looking for signs of a leaking head gasket, if only because at your mileage you may be due for one.
