US octane primer Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 15 Mar 2004 12:28:51 In Reply to: Please, can anyone translate between US octane >, Bill Davies, Sun, 14 Mar 2004 14:38:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I imagine that there must be a conversion formula, but since no one has chimed in, I offer the following. In the Chicago area, octane ratings posted on the pumps are:
Regular unleaded: 87 (priced about $1.80/US gallon)
Mid-grade unleaded: 89 (priced about $1.90/US gallon)
Premium unleaded: 93 (priced about $2.00/US gallon)
Prices are approximate, current for suburban Chicago (higher tax in the city limits) and show the general differential per grade level.
Our gasoline typically "contains up to 10% ethanol" (made from corn, a big cash crop in Illinois), which I believe lowers the energy content but is good for a tax credit for the fuel companies and allegedly beneficial for the air quality - not sure how this affects the octane rating.
