My 1995 9000 Aero w 162K miles on it neede a new water pump. The original one was making a hell of a racket.
Garage said I needed a new tensioner as well, and quoted me $775.
I bought the Hepu pump from eEuroparts, new t-stat, new upper/lower radiator hoses, new heater core hoses, and new clamps. "I don't need a new tensioner", I thought.
Water pump R&R is kind of a bear. I removed the fender liner, popped the A/C compressor (don't disconnect the hoses) and set it on the front cross member. This gave pretty easy access to the water pump.
Removal and install went very well. I did my hoses and t-stat while waiting for the RTV-Blue to set. Broke the PCV elbow at the cam cover. Bitched about how much of a PITA getting to the back of the heater core hoses was.
While I was at this stage, I finally took the time to R&R my lower engine mounts - a job I have been dreading for months. Went incredibly easy. Garage wanted $450 labor to do it.
So now I'm psyched - new water pump, hoses, and engine mount - and I'm putting the serp belt back on, and the tensioner explodes. Cursing. More cursing. It's 5:30PM on Saturday and guess who will have to wait until Monday morning, miss work, and finish the job? Me.
Monday morning, got new serp tensioner for $190 (they only sold the whole ass'y), new PCV elbow, and a foot of pretty blue silicone hose and finished the re-assembly. My serp belt tensioner install was pretty easy.
Filled her with coolant and started her up. Minor weeping at the hose connection to the reservoir. No other visible leaks. I'm flabergasted. I have a gallon jug of pre-mixed coolant in the car - just in case.
Difficulty/curse quotient on a 1-10 scale:
Waterpump - 4/10
T-stat - 5/10 (lotsa little hoses and crap in the way)
Upper/lower radiator and reservior hoses - 2/10
Heater core hoses - 6/10 (the ends in the aquarium are a PITA)
Lower engine mounts - 4/10 (by the time you've got the fender liner off, you're halfway there)
Tensioner - 3/10 (personally about a 6 due to one significant smashing of the knuckles while installing the tensioner pulley and trying to compress the tensioner - remember tensioner pulley is reverse thread)
Time - started jacking the front of the car at 9:00 AM saturday. Worked pretty steady until 6:00 PM. Picked up tensioner at 9:15 AM monday, had car back together by 11:30 AM. I'm probably slower than some.
