automatic transmission removal

I have a 91 9000S, non-turbo that needs some work performed on the transmission (which cannot be done in the car because it has ABS), so I'm taking it out.
As I'm standing on the driver's side, with the wheel at my shins, and looking down on top of the transmission, there are several connections that need to be removed. The Saab service manual is not exactly helpful at how to remove these connections, especially how to remove the selector arm.
There's a ball and socket joint there that COULD come apart, but I don't want to split it because the Saab manual says "Do not split the universal joint."
Anyone have any pointers on how to disconnect the selector arm? As autos are almost "black magic" to me, I really don't want to do anything that will cause more problems later.
Any other tips on automatic tranny removal would also be appreciated.
Thanks.
