Salutations:
Spring is on it's way and my '89 9000 engine and turbo are sitting on a pallet awaiting attention. It's a 300,000km engine with a fresh water pump and fair, mostly even, compression across all holes.
It's a non-DI, non-balance shaft 16v unit which will likely need a fresh distributor head and shaft as well as main seal - although I did the water pump about 5,000km before I pulled the engine. The turbo was in good shape, but I'll bet the block gaskets and valve seals were getting long in the tooth.
Anyway - it is my hope to find and mate it to a great series one 5 speed body over the summer and I thought I'd address anything I should while the engine and turbo are out awaiting a new home.
I would like to do a 'mild' job on the engine - maybe some balancing and lightening - perhaps port the head. Nothing heavy, but if I do find a really nice shell to mate it with - I get as much as possible done to the power plant while it is out with an eye to reliable longevity on the powertrain from here.
Advise?
Things you would have done differently when you had your engine out?
Stuff you regretted?..
As always, no detail too insignificant - no story too long.
