I've had to clean out the front drains on my 95 CS a couple of times. When clogged they definitely let water in. Even though you didn't have the sunroof open, the dirt & grit can get in since water gets past the sunroof panel. That's why the drains are there. I took a length of vacuum tubing and worked it down the drains, intermittently blowing through it and using some compressed air. Did the trick both times. Just takes a bit of patience to keep pushing the tubing further down.
When you remove the aquarium cover you can see the ends of the drains. They have those 'bleed through' ends on them like the drains in the wheel wells.
