Hi all,
I replaced both upper and lower motor mounts, and here's my experience.
I decided to do lowers first, then uppers, since I figured the lowers would be more trouble. I wanted a smooth ride so I bought 2 hyd. lowers and 2 oem uppers from eeuroparts.
LOWERS: The lower front was not much of a problem. I didnt drop the subframe completely and had an engine hoist, but was able to swap the mount out. The old mount looked like black mashed potatoes/mortar and pestle (have pics). The rear lower was a bit more problem getting it out. Had to use a piece of wood and push and pry method + 2 hours. Surprisingly the new mount just popped right in.
UPPERS: I didnt want to chance the poly/rubber setup, so I opted the cheaper, yet harder route with 2 oem bushings and a rigged-up washer-press. I removed the dogbone and cut out the old bushing with a hacksaw with 1 cut, and hammering it out. Somebody pop-riveted the bushing in aparently !!!! I managed to hammer the new mount into the dogbone without the need of a press. So far so good.
The fun started with trying to remove the front upper bushing with a hacksaw while on engine. I made 2 cuts about 60 degrees apart, and I expected the thing to come out but No. Got out the chisel and started hammering and no go. I chiseled to the point where 1/5 of the mount was chiseled and bent away, but the thing seemed to be welded on. I tried the home-made press to press it out, but that didnt do either. Eventually, I decided to remove the bracket from the engine, which for my car (86 9kT) involved removing serp. belt, 3 bolts holding the PS pump + 3 bolts for the bracket. When got it out, there was ALOT more hammering and chiseling and eventually it came out. (It was almost physically impossible for it to stay on at that point.) It turned out that there was some corrosion that formed on the rim of the alum. housing(maybe from the steel sleeve of the bushing) that sealed it on there.
FINALLY, I did a little bit of sanding on the new mount, and used the homemade press + WD40 to push it into the bracket (No Problem!!). Put everything back, and now the car runs like new.
Very smooth at idle. There might be a slight increase in vibration during hard acceleration and boost, but that just makes it feel like an airplane during taking off.
If I were to do it again, I would probably invest in a sawzall. And if I had the real bushing tool around, I'd use it. But for me I was able to do all the mounts with minimal cost. (and an expanded vocabulary) So, does anyone know why the eeuroparts lower hydro mounts are much cheaper than other sites? I think its like $29.95 vs $69.95 or something?
