9000 16T rebuilds

Ive got a 1988 9000 16T with about 270,000 klm (160,000 miles) on the clock. My girl managed to cook the motor a while ago when the thermistat chucked it. Compression is between 120 & 150 psi.
I have just scored a 1985 B202turbo motor that has good compression (175 to 180) and good oil pressure, but noisy tappets until the motor is well warmed up. This motor does not perfom as well as the 1988 motor.
There are at least 6 noisy tappets, and as you normally only get one or two, I'm wondering if there is a common problem about oil supply galleries to the cam followers getting blocked?
These two motors also seem to have different Top End Gasket Kits, and I'm curios if the head off the 1988 motor can be fitted to the 1985 block? What is different? Can the heads be modified? If not, can the cam followers be exchanged?
While I've got the motors out, and i'm stuffing around, what cost effective performance mods can be done that won't make the motors less reliable?
Where can I get the measurement specs and wear limits for these engines?
Help would be appreciated.
