the synthetics are too slippery for proper syncro engagement, so to are GL-5 gear lubes. Some research on other imports with traversely mounted trannies with GL-5 fluids 'glazed' the syncros in a matter of several thousand miles (some as low as 5K).

Honda makes a good product....a 10W30/40 oil with special syncro 'additives' (for better engagement) and some EP additives to protect surfaces that do see some stress under hard driving.

Scanwest in Seattle uses Redline products for their rebuilt 9K tranmissions,,,,,,,but as far as I know it isn't MTL, but Lightweight Shockproof, with is a 75W 140. MTL on the other hand is 70W80 I think which hardly meets the hot vicosity equivalent of a 10W30. IF the fluid is designed for transverse transmissions and for brass syncros, the viscosity is comparable to 10W30/40, AND there are no friction modifiers there is no locigal reason why this fluid would damage a trans. But stranger things have happened, amny times...apparently, on this BB;-)

The more I think about the new SAAB fluid, the more I think that it was an effort similar to Honda.....to have a more robust fluid (with some EP additives), but have it pricipally based on conventional motor oil (unless it is a full synthetic??) THat's just my opinion though.

that being said, don't use motor oil with 'friction modifiers' either. I tried a racing SAE oil with these additives, and 2nd gear was crunchy. no good!

I would recomment the new Saab fluid, 10W40, Shell Rotella 15W40, and Honda MTF.............as a 'safe' recommentdation;-)
