Some 2.3L non-turbo engines in certain markets (Sweden and North America) are fitted with an electric secondary air injection pump that completes the combustion of unburned fuel in the exhaust stream when the engine is cold and has recently been started.
It only functions for the first few minutes after startup - and may, in that time start and stop several times, depending on the conditions.
After a few years the pump itself begins to get noisier, and the non-return valves that control the airflow will begin to stick and wear. I would not worry about it immediately, as it is nothing essential to the running of the engine. If the system should fail entirely, I believe the computer will trigger a _CHECK_ ENGINE, indicating low flow through the secondary air system.
