I have been watching the motor mounts on my 94 9000cde non-turbo(135,000 mi) for some time. The uppers were cracked but didn't look that bad. Then one day my flex pipe started to leak. I put a Starla system on about 2 years ago. i replaced everything except the cat. So I figure crappy Starla header pipe. I dug around a little here and learned to check the motor mounts. Sure enough- foot on brake with hood up I could see the engine rise about 2 inches or so when I went from park to reverse. Great test to check motor mounts. I order the 2 uppers, only the front lower and a new header pipe from Eeroparts.com. (Thank you Eeroparts.com- you are the best). Of course I do not order the rear because it looks hard to get at and I always deny the hard things in life. I start reading as much as I can here on the archives. Quasi is THE place to start. Excellent write up. I also find everything I can from Ari- what a smarty pants he is!!!! Here are some side notes-
1. Don't fool yourself- replace all 4 mounts.
2. The lowers are easier than the uppers- do not be afraid to unbolt the sub-frame to gain clearance. Its only 7 or 8 bolts and provides the needed room. I left the lower rear just barely in so I could posistion the new one just right for replacement.
3. Uppers- I ended up takeing the whole dog bone out. The mount that is attached to the engine is easy to remove- just remove the upper bolt from the alternator and swing it back twords the fire wall. This makes it easy to get to the 4 bolts holding the mount to the engine. I cut the old mounts out but for the life of me could not press the new ones in. I had them pressed in by my techs at work. They even said it was a tough press. I tried to press them in with washers and such but -not even close.
4.Results- The old girl is as smooth a a babys butt. What a difference. An idie by me quoted 650 dollars for just the 4 mounts. I figure at least another 200 for the header pipe. All said and done- 250 dollars in parts. Of course it took me 2 days to do it( 6yr old son trying to help) but well worth the time.
The bad news- the day I was to start this project my sister-in law backed into the front of the SAAB in the driveway with her Durango. Headlight smashed, grill broken, hood dented and sprug, and paint cracked on the fender. I almost started to cry but at least it was the car and not one of the kids. Oh well- used headlight 125$, lots of rivets to piece the grill back together. I will live with the hood.
That is my tale. If there is anyone in the Rochester NY area that needs help or guidence doing this just drop me an e-mail.
Thank You to everyone here who tells thier stories-
