I missed the whole thread about downshifting... Here's what I do.. and I wonder what kind of damage I am doing to my poor car.
I'll hit the clutch and use the brakes (or sometimes 3rd gear) to get it down to about 45mph. Then i'll throw the shift in second and "reverse pump" the clutch. While at the same time hitting the brake, I slowly come off the clutch, but not all the way. The rpms go up and the car noticeably slows down, then i put the clutch back down and let the rpms rest down for a second and do it again... repeat this until i'm pretty much stopped.
I've been driving this car (and doing that) for 4 months.. I did the same thing to my 89 900S for 3 years, I replaced a master cylinder at some point(was leaking when the engine was replaced), but I don't know if it was even related, but didn't seem to do any other damage.
