When my chain started to rattle, it broke. I have a 91 CD turbo that has been maintained by the book since new. I couldn't tell you if the chain broke because the worn sprocket cut the chain or if it stretched and broke. Perhaps Saabracer will be as lucky as some of you, but I had to replace chain, sprockets, guides, 6 valves, and a head gasket when my chail failed. Very expensive compared to the cost of a new chain installed.
I didn't notice if the original post mentioned the year or engine type. I can't believe that one of you would drive the car with that noise and not expect something to break. They don't rattle by design, they are wear items, like clutches, brakes, belts and hoses. Just happens to be one of those items that will really ruin your day if it breaks.
