It could be an issue with the valve body. However, 125K is about right for a 9K tranny to start to come apart. I'd bet that even if the problem is just the valve body, the clutches are worn.
If it is indeed Erikkson (and there isn't any other tranny vendor in CT that I know of), they provide a good product. $1.5K is less than I expected, so that's a decent deal. I'd happily buy a rebuilt from Erikkson - they do a good job, and a new one is just as good. Unless there is a warranty difference, see if a rebuilt will save you money. $2K for a fresh tranny isn't a bad deal.
Spending the money isn't fun, but if you've got the other problems in the car sorted out, it's a decent investment. With a fresh tranny, if you've got the other issues right, the car is easily good for another 50K miles.
Look at it this way - if you get rid of the car, you'll still need a car. You can go out and buy a used car, and if it's got mid to high miles, all you're doing is trading your known problems for unknown ones. If it's low miles, you're going to be out some cash. And there is still no guarantee of zero maintenance costs. And a new car - well, you'll drop $2K in transaction fees (sales tax, etc), not to mention the off-the-lot depreciation.
If a car is in decent shape, maintenance is cheaper than new or near-new. Yes, $2K may be a hit, but that's 1.6 cents a mile; not bad.
