When I got it, my 96 CSE 5-spd would rarely pull to the bottom of the red. Usually just went to middle of hatched area, even with premium. Still plenty of poke, though.
And the boost gauge wouldn't go down into the green. Someone here suggested checking the hooter valve. So I pulled it and found I could practically breathe through the vacuum line nipple: it was totally shot. Surprised I didn't have idle and other problems.
Put on a new valve (3.0 bar) and the car now easily pulls into the red, maybe 1/3, then backs off to bottom of red. Tested this on along 8% grade in fifth and pulled easily from 55 to 90, red boost all the way.
That said, I realize the boost gauge is partially entertainment, but changing the hooter did make a difference.
Now I have to see what I get using lower octane. That test was done with 91 octane.
Octane does seem to make a difference in how far the ECU will let it boost--I noticed this even before swapping the hooter.
Any other experiences?
Noel
