We just did a NG900 and I think the procedure is the same for the 9K. You put it in 4th and put a pin (or a nail) into a hole in the top of the transmission. (Normally covered with a rubber or plastic pin.) You undo the bolt that holds the linkage to the shifter. You THEN shift into third which will withdraw the rod from the transmission (since the bolt is loose AND the transmission is now "locked" in 3rd. At that point the transmission will come out of the car, linkage wise. Assembly is the reverse. You shift back into "3rd" and the pin goes into the transmission linkage. Tighten the bolt, remove the nail, replace the hole cover and try all six gears (including reverse).
Now we've never gotten it right the first time. Usually can't get into 5th. You loosten the shift linkage bolt and move the shifter slightly left (toward 1st/2nd) and retighten. That gives more clearance on the right side. Note there are no notches or "H" pattern in the shifter itself. All that's in the transmission. It takes some futzing around to get it right but I'll be surprised if linkage alignment isn't your issue. It's a uniguely Saab problem and not a serious one. There's no positive lock up on that shifter bolt. It can be adjusted in, out, left, and right. Best done with two people.
