More like not worth it Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 7 May 2004 10:02:56 In Reply to: Turbocharging a 93 9000 2.3, Albert Lewis, Thu, 6 May 2004 19:29:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This one comes up regularly. My response is, "If you have to ask this question, you can't."
The turbo is not a bolt-on to a non-turbo engine. The engine has been modified in terms of compression ratio, and the beefing up of some components. Then there are all the fuel system changes to supply the additional fuel, ECU changes, new/added plumbing, intercooler, wastegate, etc. It's a lot more than just the engine.
So, to do it right is not worth it. I've always gone by the four-screw turbo upgrade-
Remove the four screws on the license plate
Remove non-turbo car.
Install turbo car.
Tighten license plate screws.
From an economic/time standpoint, it's a losing proposition. Turbo cars are highly available.
The reason I say "if you have to ask.." is that to turbo a non-turbo car, AND have something that won't grenade in the first 20 miles, takes a bit of skill and experience. No offense here, but if you don't know what it'll take, I can assure you that you probably can't get it right on the first try.
Now, if you want to learn something, have money lying around and aren't worried about making it an economic proposition - basically -you want a project - then by all means, go for it.
