92 9000 - shifter/pre-purchase q. (little long)

hi all - I'm looking at a 92 9000 (standard hatchback model) and after getting some info from this board (thanks to all who've responded!), and looking over Quasimotor's 9000 site (a godsend...) I finally took a test drive. It was a nice car, kept pretty well -- inside was a little less than pristine (it's a 92, after all and the guy didn't seem all that particular about this stuff), but was all in all okay. He's asking 2600 for it (127500 miles, 5 spd, a/c not all that cold, which might be an issue) which seems high to me, but I took a ride anyway.
It's not worth 2600, that's for sure, but it wasn't bad at all. No TCS, no turbo, no auto trans -- all good things in this case.
But here's a weird thing about it: when driving, I tend to keep one hand on the shifter. I think this is a city driving thing -- always never sure when you have to shift down immediately-- but when I drove this 9000 and accelerated, there was a tug on the shifter. Maybe it's related to engine torque and I'm just not used to it? I didn't know if this was a Saab thing or what? Any ideas?
And if anyone has ideas as to how much they might offer, I'd be glad to hear it. Kelley Blue Book lists it (in "good" condition) at around 21-2200; Edmunds at 1590. I'm not offering 2600, that's for sure, but if this shifter thing sounds really bad to people, I'd like to have a sense of what's going to have to go into this car.
I appreciate any advice/ideas people are willing to give. Thanks!
