I suppose the first place to start would be to do an honest evaluation of the rest of your car. How's the engine, how's the body and how's the interior? If all of those things look to be good for another 50k or so then you might want to fix it. From a strickly value point of view it's pretty grim. With 178,000 miles your car is probably worth $2,500 max (assuming it's a turbo) on a good day, with a functional transmission. And you'd probably have a hard time finding a willing buyer at that price. Retail value is only relevant if you sell the car, think in terms of what you'd have to spend to replace it as a comparison. If you dump it, you will get next to nothing and then have to come up with the money for a new car. The cheapest way out, from a cash out of pocket standpoint, is to fix the trans and hope you can get another couple of years out of the car.
