Actually the noise has been there for about a year, more so with the warmer weather. Similar symptoms a year ago (and maybe earier), but on a much less pronounced level. THe timing chain actually eliminated noise from that side. Cold performance is excellent up to about 140F oil temp. My cylinder head is the old type with above feed tubes, and hte orings are probably shot (car overheadted last year when the cranck pulley blew on hte highway;-(, so under hot condition (hot oil), I am loosing pressure up there. That may expain my noticable oil pressure drop when engine gets hot (50psi cold at2000RPM, down to 32psi at2000). SOunds like air is getting in the lifters after only an hour of sitting too...dry clatter for a second or 2 on start up). must be tons of oil leaking out of the lifters.
my 88 doesn't have AC, so that is good to go and most of the reast of the engine has bee rebuilt, or will be (head).
as I said, I don't think it's the rods (or rod), but am definately curious, what components of the valve train can make such a racket!
Even if we can't figure this out on the net, I throw the newer head on the weekend, and see if that is the difference, THEN I bet I'll know if it is the rods eh?!
Rod bearings are ~$40, so the expense is not the issue. mucking around over the legs of a scissor lift when hte engine is still in the car---to put new bearings in, will be a bother...doable, but a bother;-)
