My son just went through this same conundrum and maybe I can save you some shoe leather. He took a new job that means a lot of driving and needed something to replace his '89 900. He's always wanted a BMW 3 series, and was looking at '99 with 55k. Ultimately we concluded that what he really neeeded was a specific tool to do a specific job, and BMW is simply not the tool to do that job--nor are any other high line European cars including Saabs and Volvo 240s. The per mile figure I've most recently heard is that it costs $.42 a mile to operate a midsized car on the order of a Taurus. At 40K a year that's $16,800! Maybe the first question you should ask is if you deduct that from what you made last year, does your job really justify that kind of expenditure? Maybe what you really need to do is get an older 9k/classic SPG/Convertible to enjoy on weekends and a Civic, Corolla, deisel VW to do the 40K thing. My son bought a new Golf for what it's worth.
