It's no reliable standard formula for amount of oil. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: How much oil to add when replacing receiver/drier?, Erwin Timmers, Sat, 15 May 2004 17:55:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Most systems hold a total of about 6 Oz of oil when bone dry, but as soon as the system is running the oil is blended with the refrigerant and circulated through the whole system.
You can never tell for sure where the most amount of oil is accumulated when replacing a part.
I use a case by case study on each car and base it on the amount of oil I see dripping out when disconnecting a line or placing a condenser or rec/dryer on high end and let the oil drip out.
If the hoses are saturated with oil I know it's quite a bit in there and only add a couple of ounce when doing the A/C service.
If I see no oil whatsoever and maybe a light grey dust inside the hoses, I use the full amount of oil when charging, depending on if I installed a new compressor or not? The new compressor comes filled with oil and you don't need to add any extra.
As I said earlier, it is no reliable set rules for this but adding a couple of ounces when in doubt could be ok.
You don't want to have too much or too little of oil in there.
