I found my spare one and compared the resistance readings with the one on the car - my little multimeter is on its last legs but basically the old valve offered no resistance at all when reading between pins 1 & 2 and 2 & 3, while the spare showed about two ohms in both cases. Anyway, it works, so forget about the FPR, thanks.
What I didn't say earlier was that I'd taken the plunge last week and snipped the orange wire to pin 14 to knock out the circuit that limits boost on my automatic car. Clearly I was worried that this had gone sour on me - and maybe it has, because I don't know why my BPC has just failed.
Anyway, after a few miles of fluttering and cutting back while the thing adapted, I'm now getting a reliable 0.95 bar after a flick up to the stop on my admittedly cheapo test gauge, which is marked 1.0 bar. This is spot on for a manual of my year (1993), and gets me near the end of the stripy section on my dash gauge.
