My car is a ’95 9000 Aero, with 145,000 miles. When I bought the car with 120,000 miles, the clutch pedal was stiff. I had heard that clutches near the end of their life had stiffer pedal action, so I figured when I had the clutch replaced it would be easier. I replaced the clutch master cylinder anyway, with no change in pedal stiffness.
Well a couple months ago the transmission made a metallic snapping noise, and I lost 3rd and 4th gears. So I had the transmission replaced with a rebuilt Erickson, new clutch, throw-out bearing, slave cylinder and high pressure line from eEuroparts put in. At first the clutch action was light, but the clutch didn’t disengage until the pedal was quite low to the floor. So rebled the clutch using the motive products pressure bleeder, which helped move the disengagement point to a reasonable mid-point. The pedal then got stiffer, and within a week it was back to the same level of effort as with the old clutch.
So I picked up a spring at the hardware store that was the same diameter as the clutch assist spring, cut it to the longest length that would fit, and replaced the stock clutch assist spring. This helped a huge amount, but the pedal is still stiffer than I would like.
So to the two questions I have: One, is it possible that my independent mechanic who replaced the clutch didn’t get it aligned properly, or forgot to lube something, resulting in a heavy clutch? The clutch action does seem smooth though. Second, is there anything else I can do to lighten up the clutch pedal?
Thanks, John
