Timing chains/balance chains

I had a horrible clacking/rattling noise intermittently from my engine, which a specialist told me was chains. (It's a 97 2.3 turbo with 97,000 miles)So I've pulled everything out, and to be honest, it all looks fine in there - actually really nice. Comparing the new parts to the old parts, I can't see any difference!
I bought a timing chain kit, and balance chain kit, so I have all the parts and can't send partial items back.
It seems sensible to replace the chains and the plastic parts as a matter course, even though the chains seem to be the same length, and the plastic parts only have a slight groove. But what about the sprockets and tensioners?
Should I replace everything just to be sure, or only the items that look worn? I could recover some of the money by selling unused parts, or maybe keeping them for use at 250,000 miles :)
It's a real dilemma, and I am really hoping I haven't just done a job that didn't need doing, even though it has been educational.
