Joe,
I had a similar experience with a C900.
First things first: ATF and coolant hoses do NOT play well together! The oil attacks the rubber, I strongly suspect this is why your upper hose failed. In my 900, I ended up replacing all except maybe one coolant hose (including the ones going to the heater core) because of this.
It's pure speculation, but I can easily imagine a connection between the overheating and the ATF cooler failing - it may have been close to failure and the added thermal stress put it "over the top".
Regarding "treatment", IIRC what I did on the 900 was (*before* replacing the hoses) fill the cooling system with water plus a dose of dish detergent (to remove the oil), run it until partly warmed up, let it cool, drain coolant, repeat 2 or 3 times until what comes out looks clean. Drained and refilled the transmission 3 times I think. Drove the car for ~2 years afterward with no problems.
