So I've made the plunge into a poly tranny mount on my '90 5-speed turbo. The original rubber mount was in great condition, but out it went nonetheless!

The procedure was indeed easy as others have mentioned, except for getting the darned old mount out (lots of time and swearing). I had to take the cover of the transmission bellhousing off, no way could I leave it in and do the job. Something to be aware of is that I couldn't jack up my tranny as much as would have liked because the left driveshaft was running into the bottom of the strut.

End result? Nothing controversial. It's a compromise between better shifting and more engine vibration. There is an added low-frequency rumble at idle (and even at speed to some degree) with the new mount. But the improvement to the shifting quality is remarkable. Before I was having a sometimes spongy and missed downshifting into second, a terribly notchy 3rd gear upshift, really hard to get in reverse, etc. It's all more consistent and better now. I'm happy.
