This sounds vaguely familiar. The bracket is triagular in shape and is held on by two bolts that go through the timing cover. There is also one Torx screw that is impossible to get off, unless you know the trick (which I learned from reading this board). Once you take out the two hex bolts, rotate the whole bracket counterclockwise and it will loosen the Torx screw enough to get it off.
I'm a huge fan of Helicoil fasteners. You might consider using one to repair the thread, because it will be stronger than a new piece of threaded aluminum.
