I use the 82 degree in cars older than 96 (pre OBD 2). Never had a problem.
It's an controversial issue and lots of people have different opinions about it. Many say to leave it as what the manufacturer say since they should know the best.
"Hotter" thermostats makes the car save some gasolin but it could also bring the car over the edge and not pass the newer emission gas NOx because of a hotter running engine.
With post 96 cars (OBD 2) it could get trickier because of the more sofisticated fault tracing software that is preprogrammed with a certain temp/time curve.
You probably could still get away with a GOOD quality low temp thermostat in a newer car but if you start throwing whatever thermostat in there it might trigger the CEL light due to that the engine doesn't heat up in the same way the ECU is programmed for.
Volvo have a bulletin out for their newer cars, 99-2003, that the car needs a software down load fix if a certain fault code is found regarding temp sensor/thermostat.
The computer engineers set the high/low value of the accepted temperature/time window to narrow and in certain climates it triggers the CEL.
So the software fix only widens the parameters set in the ECU to allow higher deviation of engine temp.
