Hey Frank, I wish I knew the details on the stock head units but most systems will pump around 25 watts per channel off the main reciever... not much. Since newer aftermarket decks can throw down an average 45 watts per channel whatever head unit you go with will most likely play much more loud and with more clarity. I myself just picked up a '92 9000 turbo and hope to be doing some custom audio work in it soon and I'm in the same position as you. I want great sound but don't want to break the bank. Get the new head unit, keep the stock speakers, and also purchase an inexpensive(USAcoustics) 4 channel amplifier that has a built in crossover for each channel so you can switch between high and low pass frequency filtration. That will allow you to weed out all the enevitably inaudiable lower frequencies that will just distort the stock clarion's at high volume. This way the stock speakers will not be able to play louder and with more definition. I'm not sure if you'll have the budget for the last little peice of this puzzle, but I'm also going to add a small 10" JLAudio or a Boston Acoustics Subwoofer to the mix to give the music the overall strength it needs. The main speakers can run off the first two left and right channels off of a high pass filter and the rear two channels can run off of the low pass filter into the dual voice coiled Subwoofer. You can easily keep this sound system under $700. Good Luck!
