Here I diverge with Saab conventional wisdom, but I can tell you that perfectly healthy lower mounts can and do allow sufficient movement to strain, and eventually, destroy the uppers. Just guess how much the uppers figure into engine control? Almost not at all! Plus, simple age and heat do break down the rubber in those uppers.

If you're not feeling undue powertrain windup on acceleration, or hearing a "clonk" sound (also on acceleration), your lowers are fine, and you can spare yourself the pain of paying for new mounts. If a couple hundred doesn't faze you, then by all means; but don't assume bad uppers are as ominous a sign as all that.

Basically I've experimented over the years with replacing the uppers and leaving them alone, and have yet to replace lowers (out of laziness). I have one car that DEFINITELY needs them, and I will replace them soon -- with used ones pirated off a parts car I have. But each of these cars gets a "it needs new mounts" sales pitch from every mechanic who looks at it. Perhaps that's technically correct, but for my budget and the way I drive it's really not necessary.

I think instinctive lower mount replacement ranks with instinctive DI cassette replacement as among the most common more-serious-than-needed repairs.
