Do you have the timing cover off to see where C is on the crank sprocket? When I did the hg, I maintained tentsion on the chain the entire time to keep it on the crank sprocket. Then I referenced a point in the chain to the mark on the exhaust cam. Then counted links to the mark on the intake cam. However if you think about it, the chain's reference to any of the sprockets doesn't matter. Just make sure that the crank is TDC on the pulley mark to the block. Then make sure each of the cam's sprocket marks are at 12o'clock to the head. Mine were very close to dead center. Maybe your chain is stretched?
