Thermostat gasket? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Ahhh, the aroma of coolant...., Noel, Thu, 3 Jun 2004 14:23:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had a similar odor/seepage problem which went away when I replaced the thermostat. Yes, the odor will get sucked into the cabin air intake and no, Barrs Leak didn't cure this leak. The solution to this problem was a nice side benefit of thermostat preventative maintenance, no leakage was visible (or I wasn't looking there). It's easy to imagine that whatever coolant seeped out was vaporized on the hot cylinder head. I was preparing to do a heater core (the smell was that bad), glad that I could avoid it - for now.
On the advice of my local dealer, I installed the new thermostat with "Sylglide" (sp?) smeared around the gasket - I believe that this is some sort of silicone-based lubricant that doesn't harm the rubber. I don't know if Vaseline (similar consistency) would degrade the gasket or not, but they gave me a dab of their preferred goop in return for paying $30 for the thermostat!
