I had a charging problem several months ago resulting in overcharging and running roughly. The dealer said it was the alternator and quoted $1200 to replace it including a new battery. After much consideration of my brother in laws advice that it was not the entire alternator, he replaced a part of the alternator he ordered from NAPA. This worked fine and the car ran and charged fine at 13.4 to 13.9 volts all the time, except when starting which I was told was normal then it went back up. It's been appx 3000 miles or 3 months and all was 100% fine until today. We were out shopping after dinner and I looked down and saw 10.5 as the voltage reading. I kept an eye on it [as I have sine the first time] and it went lower and lower until I found an Advance auto parts store and pulled in [voltage dropped to 8.1 and the Anti Lock light came on]. I asked the employee there to check my battery which he did and said it's bad, the car would not start at this time, it was dead. The battery was never replaced like the dealer said was necessary due to severe overcharging however it never had given us a problem since the alternator part repair. I had them install a new battery for $89.99. The employee asked me to start it to check the charging system and said the alternator was bad according to his machine and the voltage was only 12.4 according to my digital display. His advice was to get home ASAP and have the dealer replace the alternator. I was concerned as we were 60 miles from home and it was 8:00, almost dark and feared the battery would not last with lights and all on. We drove home with no problem but the digital voltage readout did go down to 12.0 before we got home. It flucuated from 12.4 down to 12.0 during the trip but when we pulled into the driveway it was at 12.0 and did not go up or down. What could be the problem? Is/Was the alternator bad all along not just the alternator part? Was the battery the problem? Is it supposed to always read 13.4 and up or was it a bad battery causing the higher readings? If you can help please advise what should be looked at. I've not yet contacted my brother in law. He's a great mechanic [works for GM] but I hate asking relatives to help out and don't want him to think he's in any way responsible. Maybe some guidance for him if/when I do ask him to check it out.
